Building Community and Transforming Lives for Idaho’s Military Families
One of Idaho’s greatest strengths lies in its veteran community and their families. But before Mission43 was launched in 2016, there wasn’t a dedicated place to support and challenge this group as they transitioned from their military careers to civilian life.
“Military members are the best leaders in the world. And Idaho is one of the best places to live. So why not bring the two together and create a space for military members and their spouses to not just live but thrive?” asked Roger Quarles, Executive Director of The J.A. & Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation.
The Foundation envisioned an organization built by veterans, for veterans, that would challenge all preconceived notions of what post-military service might look like.
“How can we support veterans and their families in a way that doesn’t currently exist? How can we foster a sense of leadership and community with veterans?” These were questions Roger and his team asked when developing the roadmap that would become Mission43.
Dan Nelson, U.S. Army veteran and Mission43 Director, has played a crucial role in developing and leading Mission43’s efforts. He emphasizes the importance of uniting veterans through shared and tangible experiences.

“You can bring people together all day long. You can serve people beer or coffee, or throw T-shirt swag at them, whatever. But if you don’t offer any value – like real value – then people are not going to see any tangible effects, and that is something that Mission43 does not accept,” said Dan.
Mission43 not only brings veterans and their families together, but they provide three pillars of support – education, employment, and engagement. Through fellowship opportunities, leadership retreats, academic support, workouts, and social events where members can let loose a bit, Mission43 has set a new standard for what life after the military can look like, not just in Idaho but nationally.

Dan believes one of the best parts about Mission43 is that it doesn’t attempt to “fix” its members, rather it embraces each veteran’s history, challenges, and strengths. With over 10,000 members, Mission43 has put Idaho on the map as the most desirable place for veterans and their families to not only live, but belong.
As one member put it, “The same love that I had for America, I have that same love for Idaho today, because of Mission43.”
