10 questions to ask when choosing, evaluating or improving your child's school

  1. Does the school reflect your family’s lifestyle, needs, values, and goals? Visit the school.
  2. What’s the school’s reputation? Don’t only rely on word of mouth, also pay a visit.
  3. How does the school compare academically to other schools with similar demographics? Resources: www.Just4Kids.org, www.greatschools.net
  4. Does the school provide a safe environment? Resource: Idaho State Department, school report cards, www.sde.state.id.us/ipd/reportcard/SchoolReportCard.asp
  5. Does the school emphasize parent and community involvement? Ask for examples or check with teachers and PTA/PTO members.
  6. Does the school have a web site with parent-friendly information such as the school’s report card, a calendar, test results, and parent resources? Resource: www.state.id.us/education/k12.html
  7. Does the school have child-friendly administrators and enthusiastic teachers? Visit and talk to an administrator and teachers in your child's grade.
  8. Does the school have a particular emphasis, or learning approach, or specific classes such as professional technical, art or music, that would benefit your child? Schedule a tour to observe a class in session.
  9. For higher grades, does the school have a good track record of graduates going on to college? Qualifying for scholarships? Ask the administrator.
  10. If your child has a learning disability, does the school have the resources your child needs? Talk to teachers, but make sure to visit and observe classes.
