10 questions to ask when choosing, evaluating or improving your child's school

- Does the school reflect your family’s lifestyle, needs, values, and goals? Visit the school.
- What’s the school’s reputation? Don’t only rely on word of mouth, also pay a visit.
- How does the school compare academically to other schools with similar demographics? Resources: www.Just4Kids.org, www.greatschools.net
- Does the school provide a safe environment? Resource: Idaho State Department, school report cards, www.sde.state.id.us/ipd/reportcard/SchoolReportCard.asp
- Does the school emphasize parent and community involvement? Ask for examples or check with teachers and PTA/PTO members.
- Does the school have a web site with parent-friendly information such as the school’s report card, a calendar, test results, and parent resources? Resource: www.state.id.us/education/k12.html
- Does the school have child-friendly administrators and enthusiastic teachers? Visit and talk to an administrator and teachers in your child's grade.
- Does the school have a particular emphasis, or learning approach, or specific classes such as professional technical, art or music, that would benefit your child? Schedule a tour to observe a class in session.
- For higher grades, does the school have a good track record of graduates going on to college? Qualifying for scholarships? Ask the administrator.
- If your child has a learning disability, does the school have the resources your child needs? Talk to teachers, but make sure to visit and observe classes.
