School Choice in Idaho
When it comes to school choice, Idaho is an open enrollment state. But for many parents, there are few affordable choices when it comes to choosing schools. That changed in 2002, when the Idaho Legislature created a new option – an online public secondary school called the Idaho Digital Learning Academy (IDLA). For thousands of students throughout the Idaho, IDLA has quickly become the school of choice. Enrollment has grown from under 100 the first year, to an expected total of more than 5,000 this year. Some students take all their classes on IDLA while others use IDLA to add classes that don’t fit into their school schedule, participate in Advanced Placement classes, complete remedial course work to catch up or to have the flexibility and individuality that IDLA provides. Online instruction at IDLA is delivered by qualified Idaho teachers, and since classes are delivered online, students can take courses anywhere they can get onto the Internet.
