Charter Schools

According to the Education Northwest REL Technical Assistance Report, (Jan 2010): “nationally, about 4,600 charter schools now serve more than 1.3 million students in 40 states and the District of Columbia. Quality is seen as job one for charters.”

• 36 charter schools statewide serve 11,825 students (4% of K-12 population).
• Seven virtual charter schools provide access statewide, in an on-line format to 36% of the charter school students (4,527 students).
• There is a cap of six new charters per year. Five new charters are set to open in 2010.
